Step into a slice of cinematic history at Village East by Angelika, a stunning movie theater nestled in the heart of New York City. Located at 181-189 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10003, this notable establishment boasts an architectural design reminiscent of the vibrant 1920s, inviting moviegoers to not just watch a film, but to experience it in a truly unique setting.

As you enter the theater, you'll immediately be captivated by the ornate details and vintage charm that envelop the space. Customer feedback paints a vivid picture of the enchantment that awaits. Rachel Arnold captures the essence well, describing it as "one of the most beautiful movie theaters in NYC," where all the comforts of home come together with the excitement of the silver screen. The plush, comfy seats are perfect for sinking into as you prepare to indulge in the vivid storytelling of cinema.

For those looking for a fantastic viewing experience, the Jaffe Theater—one of the biggest in the complex—offers showings in spectacular 70mm format, ideal for film enthusiasts. As I.E. Xam notes, the grandeur of such a large screen combined with the venue's steep balconies makes for an exhilarating atmosphere. Sound systems here are equally impressive, enriching each performance to a delightful auditory treat, much to the delight of visitors like C R, who rave about the immersive moviegoing atmosphere.

While it is true that ticket prices at Village East can be steeper than those at your average cinema, as SP mentions, the investment is well worth the experience. The money you spend helps maintain the historical integrity of this gem. Additionally, the plethora of refreshments available—from freshly popped popcorn to an assortment of alcoholic beverages—ensures that your movie-watching experience is complete, often with patrons like C R enjoying a refreshing drink alongside their favorite films.

Village East is more than just a place to watch films; it’s a cultural hub that showcases not only the latest blockbuster hits but also a rich array of local and indie films, as mentioned by Adati Tarfa during a recent film festival visit. This thoughtful curation of programming helps support the indie film community while providing audiences with fresh and diverse cinematic experiences. It’s a venue that encourages members to join and support this unique place, ensuring that the magic of classic cinema continues for generations to come.

So, whether you’re an aficionado of vintage architecture, a cinephile in search of the latest indie gem, or simply someone wanting to enjoy a film in a place that celebrates artistry and history, Village East by Angelika is the perfect destination. Grab your tickets, settle into your seat, and prepare for a movie night like no other!

Beautiful, historic cinema. Managed to catch Sinners in 70mm in the Jaffe while in town. Tickets are a bit pricey but can understand the cinema needs to be maintained. There are a number of stairs to go up to the middle and top section of the cinema, unsure if there is a lift, if you have mobility issues would recommend you enquire further for a smooth experience.

Five star rating on the huge 70mm theatre #1. with steep balconies. Theatre built in 1926. Refreshments available. Also smaller theaters.

An aesthetic gem. Catch a showing of anything in 70mm, marvel at the beauty of the building, enjoy the flawlessly fresh popcorn. This was 10/10 classy, soulful movie experience!

Been here a few times and all experiences were great. They have snacks for sale, beer, wine etc. And the interior is so beautiful the space was built in 1926 and watching films in here is so special. I went to see sinners in 70MM and it did not disappoint sound system was insane and the steep balconies and seating are really cool.

Angelika East (AE) is one of the most beautiful movie theaters in the City. It’s a vintage theater that has been around since the 20’s, and its decorative interior is just gorgeous. I love coming here because it’s like taking a step back in time. I recently saw ‘Sinners’ in theater 1, the Jaffe Theater, and it was a great movie-going experience. The screen is impressive and the audio quality is great. The theater itself is beautiful. I particularly love the ceiling as it displays craftsmanship and attention to detail that you don’t see in more modern movie theaters. The only criticism that I have is that the bathrooms aren’t as clean as they should be. They definitely need to step up their game in that department. I’ve been to AE on a regular basis over the years and I love the chilled atmosphere. Also the staff is very nice and friendly. Over the years I’ve had some great conversations with them. Many of the staff are true aficionados of the film industry. In closing, we are fortunate to have such a beautiful, vintage theater like AE. There aren’t many theaters like this left in the City, especially one playing the genres that are typically shown there. If there is a movie that’s playing that you’re interested in seeing, I would encourage you to go. If you’ve not been there before then you’ll be in for a nice treat. Strongly recommended. I hope this helps.

I did not know there was two of this in the city! Went to this location for a film festival and it was a delight to experience local and indie movies. They do show blockbuster movies but mixed in with other genres. It’s a very well patronized theater and hope people consider membership so places like these don’t cease to exist.
